Dansverkstæðið was established in 2010 by local choreographers and dance artists seeking a space to create and research and aith the aim of getting a Dance House in Reykjavík. Dansverkstæðið has over the years developed into a space that encompasses all areas of contemporary dance and performing arts. Dansverkstæðið offers residencies and rents out its studios, hosts workshops and classes and is active in various international collaborations. They are constantly working on cross-cultural artistic skill development for artists as well as well as being active in international collaborations involving capacity building, knowledge exchange and peer support.
In 2024 Reykjavík Dance Festival and Dansverkstæðið joined forces to be able to support artists and better their working conditions. Together the organisations can support artists from idea to full performance and international touring. They have also put focus on a Dance House again pushing the idea towards both authorities and public.
Dansverkstæðið is supported by Reykjavík Municipality and the Ministry of Culture.
